I was very interested in hydroponics but something about it didn’t quite “fit” for me.
While doing some research about hydroponics, I came across information about Aquaponics. Shortly after seeing this info, we went to a little introductory course about Aquaponics that was offered at a local natural/organic foods grocery store.
This is a FABULOUS system. And, you can start as large or small as you wish! You may use all sorts of recycled containers.
In hydroponics, the water becomes depleted after a period of time and must be replaced – an incredible waste and NOT at all ecofriendly .
In Aquaponics, the system is “closed” as in, the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals (such as shrimp) supplies nutrients for plants grown in the water and, in turn, the plants clean and purify the water.
One of the greatest things about Aquaponics is – NO MORE WEEDING and the proliferation of Bermuda Grass on our property will no longer be an issue.
I will no longer have to deal with nasty stink bugs devouring my Zucchinis or flea beetles destroying my Eggplants. I’ve always grown veggies organically and have been driven to the brink, trying to find organic solutions to those two bugs.
Aquaponics should be the solution for these pests and a great many more issues.
We’ve spent a fortune on watering devices and hoses – hoses that have things like “5 year guarantee” on them – yet they last only a couple of years. Where’s the receipt??? Who knows.
Or all of the time, effort and money we’ve spent, trying to augment the soil to make it healthier for the plants… only to have the garden overgrow with Bermuda grass.
We’ve recently begun working with this aquaponics program.
